Texas Gardening Book
I got this books years ago and it still has some useful information. Unfortunately it is a bit dated and now that gardening seems to be trending towards native plants, xeriscaping, and organics, I find that I refer less and less to it each year. I know the author and he is very well respected in TX. He is a wonderful photographer and he took most of the photos in the book. The photos are accurate depictions of nearly all the plants covered in the book and are useful tools if you're trying to figure out just what the previous owners planted in your yard.
What I don't like about the book is that it includes plants that are not native to TX, are invasive, or that require too much water during the summer. I hear a lot about water restrictions all over the country each summer so it really makes a lot more sense to landscape with native or readily adapted plants instead of trying to make our yards and gardens look like something better suited to the UK. I for one like the looser appearance of a native TX landscape using wildflowers in succession, native shrubs and trees, instead of going for that manicured, formal look that is so "un-Texan" in appearance.
I'd really like to see Neil do another book of TX native plants/trees suited to landscaping and gardening as we transition to more water restricted lifestyles. This book is a "keeper" though, and I don't want to get rid of it as it also helps me identify the non-native plants in the neighbors' yards when they have trouble with them.
Complete Guide to Texas Gardening
Neil Sperry's Complete Guide to Texas Gardening, 2nd Edition is a beautiful book. Although it is used, it appears to be brand new and well worth the money. I would not hesitate to order from Amazon.com in the future. They are trustworthy in every way. This book arrived within three days after I ordered it! Thank you very much.
Good reference
I bought several books on Texas gardening as I just moved here. This is another great reference book.
