Criticizing Artists, Critics, and Context...
This is a great source of first hand information about art and artists since 1945. The essays are informative, some are even humorous (Artist - William de Kooning's essay), others are, in my personal opinion, a bit wordy and require an uncomfortable chair, no distractions, and possibly a dictionary to decipher (Critic - Clement Greenberg). Context come in via psychological, philosophical, and sociological essays by people who were considered to be great thinkers of that time (C.G. Jung, John Cage, Martin Luther King Jr., etc.).
Excellent
This book is thorough and informative. It offers insight into contemporary art that could only otherwise be found in a dense collection of artist interviews, critiques, and social commentaries. The introductions to each section hit the nail on the head each time. Anyone who wants a deeper knowledge of what is going on around them should read this book. Absolutely refreshing, and long-awaited.
